In a burst of color and confidence, the city of Kisumu in western Kenya came alive with the energy of the East Africa Plus Size Fashion Affair, a one-of-a-kind runway event that proudly proclaims: Big is beautiful.
With models donning bold African wax prints and sleek, figure-hugging eveningwear, the event shattered conventional fashion norms, placing curvy Kenyan women center stage in a celebration of self-love, empowerment, and African identity.
A Movement Born from Personal Struggles and Regional Reality
The show, founded nine years ago by Winnie Wenga Walcott, is the only plus-size-focused fashion event in Kenya, a country—and broader region—where fuller figures are not just common, but culturally rooted.
“In East Africa, many women are naturally plump,” Walcott explained. “But the media tends to glorify a single body type. That has crushed the self-esteem of so many.”
Walcott created the show to counter this narrative—and to honor her mother, who inspired her to embrace her body and identity. “I used to hate my size,” said Seline Aoko, speaking proudly beside her fruit stall in Kisumu. “But she showed me I am beautiful.”
From Shame to Spotlight: Transforming Self-Image
Held in front of an enthusiastic audience of over 300 supporters, the latest edition of the show featured a diverse cast of amateur models, most of whom had no prior runway experience. Training began in March, and according to Walcott, their transformation was dramatic.
“They came in shy, apologizing for their bodies. Now look at them — confident, glowing, proud.”
One of those models was Oprah Odhiambo, an entrepreneur who twirled across the stage with joy: “We’re proving that plus-size women can do everything others can. We’re not hiding anymore.”
Voices from the Runway: Reclaiming African Beauty
For many participants, the show was a deeply emotional experience. Rosemary Odire, a singer known by her stage name Nyakusa Nyamama, shared how often she was mocked:
“People would say, ‘Big Mama, you can’t dance, get off the stage.’ But here I am. This is African beauty — proud and unapologetic.”
Wearing a leopard-print skirt, Odire danced with conviction, turning jeers into cheers.
Blending Fashion with Visibility and Wellness
While the runway was joyful, Walcott emphasized the show’s deeper mission: raising awareness around mental health, clothing accessibility, and body representation.
“Curvy women often struggle to find fashionable, well-fitting clothing. We’re here to change that—and to help women see their worth, regardless of size.”
Kisumu’s Catwalk Becomes a Platform for Change
Far from the elite scenes of Paris or Milan, Kisumu’s plus-size fashion show has become a grassroots celebration of cultural confidence and authentic African fashion.
Walcott’s vision has sparked a movement — one that uplifts, educates, and reminds every woman: beauty comes in every shape.
