In a major win for digital consumer protection, the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has secured binding commitments from Amazon to intensify its efforts in combating fake reviews and product listing manipulation on its UK platform.
After an extensive four-year investigation, the CMA has announced that Amazon will implement robust measures to detect, prevent, and penalize deceptive practices—particularly those involving false customer feedback and ‘catalogue abuse’, where unrelated product reviews are exploited to inflate ratings.
Sanctions Ahead for Non-Compliant Sellers
Under the new agreement, British sellers found using fake review tactics could face platform bans, while customers identified as habitual fake reviewers may be permanently blocked from posting feedback.
The crackdown will also extend to tackling catalogue manipulation—a deceptive tactic where sellers hijack top-rated listings of unrelated items to mislead shoppers with artificially enhanced review scores.
“These steps are crucial in ensuring that online reviews remain a trustworthy tool for shoppers,” said Sarah Cardell, Chief Executive of the CMA. “Amazon’s commitments mark a significant milestone for transparency in digital marketplaces.”
Amazon’s New Responsibilities Under CMA Oversight
Amazon has agreed to:
- Proactively monitor listings for fraudulent review patterns
- Suspend sellers or users engaging in misleading behavior
- Implement faster removal mechanisms for flagged reviews and listings
- Provide regular updates to the CMA on its progress
With around 90% of UK consumers relying on online reviews before making purchases, the CMA’s new enforcement role—empowered through updated legislation—enables it to issue penalties and demand direct compliance from tech giants like Amazon and Google.
The Bigger Picture: A Global Wake-Up Call
This move follows similar action taken against Google earlier in 2025, signaling a broader shift in how digital platforms are being held accountable for consumer trust breaches.
The CMA is now actively reviewing other review platforms, assessing their adherence to new guidelines issued in April. Violators could face formal investigations and sanctions.
What This Means for Consumers and Sellers
For shoppers, this means more authentic reviews, reduced manipulation, and greater trust in the platforms they rely on. For sellers, it’s a warning: abuse the system, and you risk losing access to one of the world’s largest marketplaces.
